Oh my goodness…I didn’t think I could love anything more than their newborn session, but now I’m in love with this one…so there’s that :) 6-10 months is one of my most favorite to photograph. This is when their little personalities begin to really shine through and they usually have a little chunk on them by then…which I LOVE.

My goal for your session is to always show the beauty in this stage of life. To take the pressure off, I assure you that if we need to we will redo it or do a smaller session to capture what we weren’t able to before. Because, ya know what, little ones have off days. I swear when they know I’m coming over they decide they won’t nap that day. I can’t tell you how many people have shared that their little one usually naps, but not on that day. The thing is, usually we are able to have a successful photo session even if it doesn’t feel like it. Sweet N was just off this day. He hadn’t had his usual amount of nap time and was teething like crazy. So, we did the session and decided I would come back for a little mini session to capture anything we missed. But oh my goodness…did we ever get so many beautiful images from the first session and the second one was just icing on the cake. You’ll see images from both sessions in this blog post :)

Seriously…my heart just smiles so big when I see this sweet family and the way they love each other. THIS is grumpy N. He’s just such a happy baby! And he is loved so incredibly well. I’m so thankful to watch him grow and cannot wait to see what the coming years bring for him.

We started with momma waking him and seeing the joy on his face as we walked into the room. There may have been a mix of pure confusion as she’s not usually joined by a lady with a camera in front of her face. Then from there it was just doing all the normal things. Getting dressed, playing in their room, some truly yummy lunch (seriously…I’m trying to convince them to do a baby food book), bath time, nursing, and night night again (since he didn’t get his first nap all out). Y’all, this is it what lifestyle photography is all about. Showing your love, the realness of it, the every day of it. All those little things that you don’t want to forget. It all passes way too quickly. I want to hold onto every single bit of it and I want that for you too.

So much love,

Cilla

top five secrets to photographing your family

How has my baby grown up so much? This is something I’ve said since he was 6 months old and will continue to think and say for the rest of his life. But, really, how has it all gone by so fast? It’s such a bitter sweet thing. On the one hand I want so badly to hold him forever. On the other hand I am so thankful that he is able to breathe and grow and learn and dance and…well…all the things. We laugh and cry and laugh some more every single time we sit and go through pictures of days past. Gosh…I just want to hold onto all of it. I’m so desperate to recall every move, every word, every tear, every laugh, every snuggle…the way it all felt. That day we went on a beach adventure in the rain and he stopped to give me a kiss. That day he held my face and told me I was the best momma ever. The day he patted my leg and said “MY momma”. Those blonde curls. That fat little belly and chubby legs. The way it feels when he wants to get just a little closer to me so he puts his face on top of mine.

Over the last seven years I’ve learned that for me, the best way to hold onto as much as I can, is to capture it on some sort of camera. Sometimes it’s my phone and sometimes it’s my big camera. Mostly, it’s my phone. I know that this is one of the greatest gifts I can give to every single person in my family. He loves sitting and looking through pictures and videos as much as we do. He loves hearing stories and remembers most of them.

I’ve always been desperate to hold onto life, even when it wasn’t so kind. I was the queen of the disposable camera and spent all my extra money in college on those little film camera and one hour photo labs. Nothing brought me more joy.

As a momma I don’t want to walk around with the camera in front of my face at all times and Steff sure doesn’t either…and…poor Bret…he’s just use to it. So I’ve learned little tricks to allow me to be in the moment and to capture it. I think you’ll be surprised by my number one secret for getting great images of our sweet little life.

First, you have to see it. What? Yes…that’s right. Before you can capture all that love and beauty that is soaking up your life, you have to clear the clutter in your heart and mind…you know…the clutter from every day life…all the million to do’s and the bills and the worries…and actually see the beauty in it all. The beauty of the chaos. The beauty of the wild. The beauty of the snack time and bath time and, yes, even screen time. The beauty in your kiddos covered in mud and grass and sweat and tears. Parenting little ones is hard work. This too shall pass. We may not be able to celebrate all of it in the moment and choose joy in all of it, but we can choose to breathe. We can choose love. We can choose to go ahead and document it, all of it, because one day we may just miss the chaos of it all. And you know what, if today isn’t a day that you can see the beauty, give yourself grace in that too. But just don’t let too many days go by before you can see that beauty that is right in front of you. It’s messy AND it’s beautiful!

family sunset session at talon winery & vineyard | lexington, ky

The sunset danced around us as the girls giggled the remaining light away. There was so much snuggling, laughing, twirling, and love. My heart nearly burst. With each moment, each click of the camera, I fell in love with them all over again. This session came after several years of trying to pin down a lake session. 2018 seemed to be the year that the lake session would finally happen until I made one of the biggest goofs I think I’ve ever made. How could this “seasoned pro” leave home without at least one fully charged battery?!? Yes…I’m going to admit it…I drove an hour before I realized it. Thirty minutes before the session. All of my batteries were dead. Completely dead. I always check my cameras before I leave, and I did check my memory cards, but somehow missed the flashing dead battery signal. I just about died right there. I called them nearly in tears. Y’all, how could I be so lucky to have client friends who dish out so much grace? I didn’t quite give myself so much grace, but I did drive home, immediately charge all my batteries, and turned on some netflix. Later we chatted and decided to go for a Talon sunset session (of course at no charge) and will try the lake again this year. It IS going to happen and I can’t wait. This entire session all I could think about is how much fun we are going to have at the lake.

These girls kept me absolutely cracking up the entire time. I am sure they fight like all siblings, but I didn’t see a bit of it. All I saw were two girls who made each other laugh…a lot…and loved each other fiercely. I loved how they attacked each other and their momma and daddy with hugs and kisses. G’s love is especially fierce and so is her personality. She could take you down with a great big G hug. B always makes me laugh because he LOVES… ;) …photos. One of my favorite memories of B is a session we had together when they were just a family of three and we were in the literal freezing cold. B was not happy. We were all freezing. But now, I laugh at just how perfect it was. It shows just how much he loves his family. S is such a good momma and I am so thankful to call her friend. She truly enjoys her girls and let’s their personalities shine. She lets them be. And, y’all, she is filled with so much grace and beauty.

I am so thankful they continue to choose me and trust me, year after year.

One last thing…I am in love with Talon Winery & Vineyard. Seriously. It’s where we had our wedding reception many years ago and I’ve loved it ever since. When we are choosing a location for family sessions I always love to shoot in my client friends homes, but I also love shooting in a big open field…especially at sunset.

So much love sweet friends,

Cilla
